Woodcrest Christian High School English Department

Reflective Essay Form 2011-2012

The reflective is basically a writing tool that shows your views on a particular topic or subject.  In this case, you are asked to reflect on your academic year in your current English course.  This is a self measurement of a sort, where you will have the opportunity to examine and discuss your experience in this course and to determine what you have gained.  This is a self-evaluation, not an evaluation of the teacher, school, rules, etc.

Task:
Choose a topic, subject, or unit taught in this course and explain what was meaningful or what added value to your learning.  Do not simply outline or summarize the lesson.  Instead, consider and share specifically what you have learned and how it has impacted your learning.

Format:
●       This essay must be typed in the standard MLA format.  Refer to the        Woodcrest Christian High School Writing Guide.
●       This essay must be a minimum of one page and a maximum of two pages
●       Writing must demonstrate formal language, correct spelling, and must be          free of grammatical errors.

Before writing, consider the following:
●       What topic, subject, or unit caught your interest?
●       How has your learning in this course influenced your thinking?
●       How does this learning influence your view of the world and the universe?
●       How are you more prepared to meet the challenges of functioning in a     secular environment?
●       How were the departmental Core Biblical Truths incorporated in this      subject, topic, or unit?

Be careful to give this paper a great deal of thought as it is representative of your learning in this course.

English II
All Quiet on the Western Front Video Group Project
Students will develop a piece of propaganda in the form of a video, either for war or against war.  The pro-war videos could be in the form of a commercial endorsing a branch of the military or a scene from the novel showing Kantorek persuading Paul and his classmates to join the army. The anti-war videos could portray a scene from the novel showing the devastation war brought.  Defend your positions with evidence, and address your audience’s concerns.  Above all be creative!  (Videos must be 5-8 minutes long, also include a screenplay typed with a list of what each member did.)

Due Date:  May 29, 2012

English II—Poetry Project
Teach a Song

What most people do not realize is that songs are a form of poetry.  The key difference is that they are set to music.  But, they actually produce the same result. Through a condensed plot structure and by using specific diction, the author is able to share his\her unique view of the world. On that note, the purpose of this project is two-fold. Firstly, I would like you to see that we study, and enjoy poetry on a regular basis, and secondly, I would like you to demonstrate the knowledge you have gained. Through your choice of song you will teach what you have learned about poetry. Be sure to pick a song that is rich in meaning as these types of songs tend to use more figurative language. You will have 10 minutes (only). We will not have time to listen to the songs during the class period.

Rules: YOU ARE THE TEACHER!

  1. Your song must be appropriate to Christian standards. It does not have to be a Christian song.
  2. You must make a copy for me and for each student in class.
  3. You must lead us through the song\poem by covering each of the following

(Verbally with the class and in writing to submit):

  1. Background information about the author and\or song
  2. Provide your interpretation
  3. Identify all literary devices and explain the impact
  4. Provide a teaching tool (hand out) that the students must complete during your presentation. Be creative! No crossword puzzles.
  5. Engage in open-discussion with the class
  6. Power Point is extra credit.

Be creative but be thorough. This project is worth 100 points in the test category, so be prepared! If you are not present on the day of your presentation I will try to fit you in at the end, but there is no guarantees. This is considered a long term assignment and the handbook rules apply.  You will be teaching at some point between May 30th and June 8th.

Woodcrest Christian High School
Portfolio: Biblical Worldview Essay
Sophomores

Background:
In the novel A Separate Peace by John Knowles, two of the major themes are “order and conformity” and “inspiration and anarchy.” Depending on the circumstances, both sets of concepts can be either advantageous or detrimental. Trace the conflict throughout the novel by choosing three instances in the novel where conflict appears. Although not required, these three instances may be the main point of each body paragraph.

Task:
Based on your knowledge of the department of Core Biblical Truths, construct an argument discussing the relevance of one’s worldview when dealing with the outside pressure of society. In other words, how might the consequences of the actions of the main characters have been different if they had a different response to the difficult situations in their lives? Write a well organized, grammatically error free essay asserting your argument. Be sure to include Core biblical Truths pertinent to this course. Be sure to support your argument with textual evidence that supports your thesis statement (i.e. quotes) in a five paragraph essay.

Although these questions do not have to be directly addressed in the essay, consider each one as you perform your analysis of this book.

  1. What is the overall worldview of this novel?
  2. How did you come to this conclusion?
  3. How could the outcome of these characters have been different if they had responded to the crisis from a biblical perspective?
  4. Which specific instances of conflict are you highlighting in your essay?
  5. Which specific Core Biblical Truths can be applied?

Be sure to avoid plagiarism at all cost! If you are unsure about what is considered plagiarism, please consult your syllabus. As always, put forth your best effort and remember, a wise student creates an outline for organizational purpose and constructs a clear, concise thesis statement.
